First, a quick parts lesson.

Within your engine are several vital parts that all work together – in perfect timing – to keep it running.  They include the crankshaft, camshaft, pistons and rings, connecting rods and timing belt.  The rings allow the piston to move in up and down motion.  A connecting rod attaches the piston to the crankshaft, which changes the piston’s movement into a circular motion.  Then timing belt then connects the crankshaft and camshaft, keeping them in time with each other, the crankshaft turning twice for every single turn of the camshaft.

You see how closely involved these parts are, each dependent upon the others for fluidity, and this takes place at incredibly high speeds.  If one part breaks, the entire system stops working.  That’s why it’s so important to seek proper maintenance for your vehicle.

Were you aware that it’s generally recommended that you replace your timing belt every fifty thousand miles?  It’s one of those smaller parts that probably doesn’t cross your mind… until it breaks and you’re stranded until the tow truck arrives.
