The Musical Instrument Museum (SIM) in Phoenix exhibits approximately 3,000 instruments from all over the world. It is located at 4725 E Mayo Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85050. Most of these playable instruments can be found in the Museum’s different halls. Many of them are even on display where you can examine them up close. The permanent collection consists of over 300 instruments from over 50 countries. The collection is arranged in seven permanent halls. The first hall is the International Hall, where the instruments from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas are located. After that, you come across the Baltic and East European, Chinese and Japanese, and the Middle Eastern and European music halls, which contain a large variety of instruments. The next hall is the African Music Hall, where you will find a rich variety of authentic instruments such as the kora, the mbira and the palenke. Or you could visit the Central Asian Music Hall to see the gandoma, the tanpura, the sitar and the khomuz. If you’re looking for a more European feel, head over to the European Music Hall, where you will find a wide variety of instruments, such as the bodhran, bagpipes, the shawm and the harp.
The Museum regularly hosts exhibitions of the instruments of famous musicians and orchestras. This way, the museum not only showcases instruments from different cultures, but also gives you a chance to see these instruments up close and play them, if you wish to. The current exhibitions are as follows: – “The Music of Brazil” – The exhibition will showcase Brazilian instruments such as the pandeiro, the cavaquinho, the maracatu, and the saxophone. – “Shreds and Scraps” – This exhibition will showcase the instruments of the western world that have been altered to a certain extent, such as the violin, the banjo, the mandolin, and the ukulele. – “Vintage Guitars” – The exhibition will showcase the various guitars in the world, with many of them on display, like the Spanish guitar, the bouzouki, the lute, the zither, and the vihuela. – “Dance Maestro” – This exhibition will showcase a wide variety of musical instruments from around the world that are used in the dance and film industries, such as the djembe, the didgeridoo, the tabla, the bodhrán and the congas. The tours are great for those who want to know more about the instruments that are being showcased and how to play them. The tours are as follows: – Regular Tours – These tours are led every week and consist of approximately two hours of playing, talking about the instruments and their history, and learning more about the instruments.
